notes, documents, and dates from a lifetime of reading about the United States
Written August 9, 2019, when everybody was putting up privacy pages, and I noticed I could write one that told the truth and still be shorter than everybody else's.
No cookies. No pop-ups, no pop-overs, no "we value your privacy" curtain across the text like a shower curtain. No advertising, no analytics account, no social buttons that report your visit to a company that thinks you are a demographic.
Each page carries a tiny self-hosted counter, a dozen lines of my own script, that counts pages, not people: it notes that somebody loaded a page, and nothing else worth having. I can see which pages are read and how often. I cannot see who you are, I do not want to, and if I could I would probably lose the list.
If you write to me (see the about page), I keep your note and your email address, because I am a sentimentalist and because half the corrections on this site came from readers I wanted to write back to a year later. I have never sold anything, including your attention. There is nothing here to sell, which I understand is not a business model. It was never meant to be.
That's the whole page. You may now go read about the nineteenth century, which is what you came for.
